Bob Cassioppi and Mark Theisen who work for Thrivent Financial in Minneapolis and Appleton are excited that we were selected to lead a volunteer team on a Thrivent Builds Worldwide (TBW) trip to Brazil. Our trip dates are July 24 - August 1, 2010. Our specific project location is Feira Nova, which is in the northern half of Brazil.
This is a wonderful opportunity to build simple, decent, affordable housing, while becoming active partners with people of other cultures. Our TBW team will work with one or more Habitat families, getting to know them, experience their culture, share their stories and hopes as we help their dreams of a decent home come true. Do not be concerned with your building or language skills -¿ no experience is necessary, and we love to teach novices new skills while appreciating the skills veteran builders bring to our team.
We are estimating a per-person land-trip cost of $1,570, plus round-trip airfare to Brazil. The fluctuation of the U.S. dollar against the Brazil Real may have an effect on the final pricing, so unless the dollar weakens further the land-trip cost shouldn't change dramatically. Land costs include all lodging (double-occupancy only) and meals while in Brazil, plus all ground transportation, sightseeing and cultural activities (for the team as a whole), traveler's medical insurance, trip-cancellation insurance, orientation materials, and a donation to Habitat for Humanity Brazil.
The Thrivent Builds program for 2010 allows for more teams to make a difference. Teams of at least 50% Thrivent members will be able to present an $8,000 donation to the local Habitat affiliate where the funds are most needed. A discounted rate is also available for Thrivent Financial members, reducing the land-trip cost from $1,570 to $1,070. Membership eligibility can be verified here: http://www.thriventbuilds.com/worldwide/benefit.html To pay the land-cost balance, you'll also be able to set up a webpage to do some fundraising if you choose, with the final balance due 45 days prior to departure (by June 9, 2010).
Our team size is limited to 20 people, and we plan to include volunteers from all over the United States. If you are interested in joining our Habitat Build trip to Brazil, please email Bob and Mark for more information. Our emails are: firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com.
Thank you for your interest in slamming the door on substandard housing. Bob and Mark look forward to hearing from you soon!
