Let me introduce myself

I am Rev. K. Robert Schmitt
an ELCA pastor in Catonsville MD

I am TB Chapter Specialist for
West Baltimore

Spouse of a Thrivent Agent

Our Build is unique
we are doing 'rehab'
2 houses in South Baltimore not far from M and T Stadium
where the Ravens play.

These are old B and O railroad workers homes.
Our local Chesapeake HFH is redoing 12 homes in this section of
Baltimore in the next year.

We have 2 with hope from Gifts in Kind for a 3rd

Our build is also a 'regional' build using more than just West Baltimore

This is causing problems I will speak about later...

Continued

Part of the problems is that TB plans are first for a ground up build plan which most of the country uses. Our whole calendar is different. We are limited to 8 volunteers in each rebuild house at a time when needed. So large groups are issues.

Because of multi chapter involvement I can not access other chapters information without going through my LCCS TB person which is cumbersome

Corporate is moving at snails pace with some things like checking because I already have donations but no 'access' to ethically deposit them

And my chapter is asking questions like who is paying for mailing etc. (especially because we are multi chapters)
Corporate has as far as I can tell no plans for administrative costs.

Well what other TB Chapter Specialists are out there...
Lets share both positive and negative.

I have more positive things but thought getting some issues out might get
us started.

Rev Schmitt,
I'm a pseudo Specialist. I was listed as Specialist on our Grant request but cannot serve as I was elected Chapter President.
Until I can be replaced, I am doing the communication and coordination work.
We just appointed two people to the role at our Board meeting tonight, so I will be working to get them up to speed.

Ours will be an additional house in Benton Harbor, MI working with Harbor Habitat (a JCWP site last year).

The biggest thing I have seen so far is that details of the program appear to be developing on the fly. At least in our RFO, the actual role of the Chapter Board is not totally clear.

yes Steve

Things seem to be developing on the fly. Although much is available from the new handbooks and now online. Sometimes the details are not there.

Chapter Boards are still working out many things since they were just told to
'recruit' a volunteer but not with detailed resources at the time.

One of the issues my chapter board raised is who or how are administration costs being paid for. There comment being a very active board is our money is already allocated I will have to find mine but I am concerned that 'fundraising' limits me to turning it all over to the TB project house not to cover my mailings etc.

This will have to be resovled soon. Anybody heard anything else on this?

I am the President of the North Sacramento Thrivent Chapter; I am not the TB specialist, but I have questions and need help. We are a new chapter and new board and sometimes I feel lost and confused.

Does anyone out there have an on-line volunteer sign up site? If so, can you help me set one up for our area? We are building 2 houses, due to start April 25. Our volunteer coordinator feels we could reach the younger group thru on-line access. Any ideas? We are planning to work with WELCA and LCMS in our area to feed the workers on Saturdays, and are developing a list of retirees that will be available for weekday work; it is getting people for Saturdays. We have 30+ churches in the greater Sacramento area so we are going to try to have each church "take" 2-3 Saturdays to work.

Has anyone out there successfully finished a house, and if so, how did it go? What worked and what didn't. Please advise.

Thanks;
Stephanie Slavin

Steph

Sounds like you are going at it like me except my situation is a 'rebuild' so great numbers of volunteers is not my high priority issue. Nor is ground up work as outlined in the TB Manual usefull for planning but finding funding is number one.
I am approaching in the next month contracters etc. from intial contacts in the Thrivent/synod/district structure. I hope by in kind donations under guidence from my local HFH to raise everything and more than I need for building my habitat houses. My goal is to multiply the money so I can then use the volunteers I get.
Two house TB share is $15000, I hope through contractors to raise $75,000 that would allow us to build a third house needing only to find $10,000 more over the entire year.

If you have problems setting up a 'chapter web site' ask again. I can find the help you need or send you to the right spot on line.

If you got into this site you should be able to find the 'help' to set up your chapter's site. Your access codes on the system allow you to do things I can't.

Question for other TB Chapter Specialists

Are you becoming frustrated with an administration problem of 'no funds'?

We here in the East communicating among ourselves in 524 Mid-Atlantic have had the sense that we are to operate without basic administrative funds. They told us our 'Chapters' are to share the money but our chapters say that they have alocated their money as they did last year and were not provided 'new' or 'extra' money just a big new project TB.

There is a rumor that Corporate is attempting to find us 'money' but its still a rumor.

I am Brent DuBois Greater Salt Lake Chapter Vice President. We have asked many of the same questions about operating funds. Our chapter has been great to support some items and the TB Specialist is planning on taking some costs out of fund raising money.

One thing that I would like to see Thrivent support is thru the chapter mailing system. It currently is very easy to send out chapter mailing thru the chapter mailing system. It would be nice to have the TB letter head and post cards like the ones suggested on the TB site.

As I indicated in the huge e-letter we received our first In Kind Gift of Electrical Labor by a member of a Baltimore Area Congregation

HFH has valued it at $3000 per house. So we have instantly raised $6000 of our required $15000

Thanks be to God!

I have meeting over the next few weeks with a plumber, and a gift of flooring being lined up. I hope to do a few extra's that I will have to debate with HFH about since they like having everything the same. I have a 'stain glass' artist in one congregation I want to make the 'glass' for above the door with HFH symbols and the Thrivent heart along with the house numbers so people always remember that this was a HFH-Thrivent House.

I hope to have above and beyond our financial needs met later this month so that we can reserve some for either another house to rehab or a future build.

I just received some great news today that I should share. Our TB Specialist just told me that our newsletter paid off. As the Chapter VP I sent out a (free) chapter newsletter to all members. You can see a copy of our newsletter on our web site http://www.lutheransonline.com/greatersaltlakechapter
The very first day that it was received a lady called to say that her husband owns a paint store and they would like to donate some paint. To top it off she said that they had just moved to the area and were looking for a church home. It was a great opportunity to invite the family to come to church.

Well things have been a little quiet lately so its time for an update

TB-Baltimore Builds

Check out our update on the West Baltimore Chapter Website.

Before and After Easter we had the Thrivent Builds Mobile in.
We had hoped to have it at Inner Harbor but ran into problems so we had it
April 11 at Baltimore Lutheran High School (see website for pictures) and 2/3 of the Middle/High School students went through the mobile (over 350 persons)

April 21 we had it at the Central Maryland Thrivent Office
April 22 we had it at New Hope Lutheran Church, Columbia Maryland
April 23 we had it at St. John's Lutheran Church, Parkville Maryland

Through the Mobile visiting we received both monetary gifts and collections at congregations, moblie visits etc. We successfully garnered additional funds for our build and for HFH.

This month we begin to look at actual work on the site.

More will come

Hello Fellow Chapter Specialists

At least those who have been reading this.

I participated in a TB conference call today about our PSR's.

There were TBCS from Minnesota, Alabama, Appelton and myself in Baltimore.

Overall the purpose was to help fine tune things that we have been doing and a bit on what problems we have.

the reports were that things were happening across the country and doing well.

I hope that some of you reading this will add in any questions and I'll try to fill you in on what happenned.

I'm a chapter specialist in Jackson, Michigan. We've just finished our build for this year in our community. Last year went extremely well - this year was like pulling teeth in many respect. It appears that we met our goals, but only just.

Some key elements that enabled us to meet our goals despite challenges involve - (a) having someone, even if they don't want to serve as a congregation champion, at each congregation to assist in getting messages to the congregation; (b) make use of the postcard system weekly or every other week to alert your chapter where you're at regarding donations, volunteers, and construction activity; (c) regularly contact your Habitat affiliate to make sure you're getting all of the information, and that it's being recorded properly.

Any other ideas that anyone has, especially as we're done with this one and ready to be thinking about next year?
