Have you ever heard of an "Outhouse Race" before. Well for 13 years now the very small Upper Peninsula town of Trenary, MI holds this race. People come from all over the state and outlying states to compete. You have to build your own outhouse and then race it down the street. You can just imagine what people have designed over the years. This years theme was, "Push Your Luck. An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 spectators turned out for the event. It's one of those unique events of the Upper Peninsula's cold, snowy winter.

Tell us of some things people in your area have come up with to have fun.

this belongs on another thread..... sorry, but it makes sense there.

Hey, I've seen the outhouse races on tv in the past. They look like a whole lot of fun. I hope you had a gand ole day. Did you win the race?

Sorry, I guess I should have put it on another thread. I'll be observant the next time I post a new thread.

Actually I didn't attend the races, even though they're only a 45 min drive from my home. I happen to have other plans on that day.

Well I've heard similar stories from my mother when I was growing up because she grew up in Brainerd. Anyway I don't have a good grip on the thrill of ice fishing and stilling in ice houses while freezing your tush off.

It was such a thrill, how could you miss the race? There couldn't have been much that outranked such a race.

Hibernate, read, bake, watch movies, bundle up and go for a walk.

Trivia nights have become popular here, and I've participated in a few. It's a lot of fun!

Since I live near a University town, there are always performing arts something or other going on.

Sit in Barnes & Noble, or the library, and drink coffee and read books I'm too cheap to buy.

Last year, my boys and I got a hotel room in our town, invited a bunch of their friends, and swam all evening and the next morning, and ordered pizza.

We have an annual talent show at church which is a lot of fun (just had it last weekend). It's amazing what people can do! My talent is organizing it.

Take dance lessons.

Sit here and post messages and waste hours just waiting for the pages to load with really slow dial up modem!

Good day!

Out house races. Is that like "toilet bowl races!" A couple towns around here, have had those.Goodness, i would think outhouse, toilet bowls would need someone to drive them.(Drive them, push them, what ever).
Menno, just had a Minnow race in town. I heard what or how they have a minnow race. WEIRD, but something to do. Minnows are put in different water held runs, and then i hear they can even use straws to blow at the fish, to get them to the finish line quicker. OH haha. Guess Menno found a way to do something silly, and have a few laughs. I didn't go either. Like a friend told me, She'd rather watch paint dry. :D. I guess , as i heard more on minnow races, we aren't doing something too unusual. They have by Lewis and Clark lake area also. I just thought i'd mention them. (Gee, guess i don't get out much!!)As i never knew of them. (oh,they told me some even paint their minnow, with racing stripes. LOL

It appears that people will dream up most anything to do that is a bit different just to get people out of their homes in the winter. Anywhere there is a lot of snow people have a tendency to get 'cabin fever'. These ideas are to help prevent this disease!

We used to put tire chains on our old pickups and race on the ice, lakes, creeks & so on. Drags and circle burnin'. Wuz fun till some fools did it too late in the year. I ended up laying on the inside of my '50 GMCs's cab top many times, sliding across the ice at about 50 laughing like the young fool I was.

Anyhow, these idiots were racin' in early April on the Missouri. Got about three laps in on a 1/4 mile circle/oval course when all four of 'em broke through running four wide. All four survived, but two of 'em weren't the same after that. Something about not likeing being on the ice??? Go figure?! "D"

That reminded me of an almost forgotten memory. My Dad had an old Ford car,he and a friend for whatever reason, cut the back end and top off of it. And they used to go out on a small ****, in our pasture. They put the chains on it too. Although it didn't get to the point of tipping it, they had a blast. Then my brothers decided they could do that too. Of course, that did not go as well. Something about going to fast, ruining tires, rodding it too much. They'd even take ol' Frosty the dog with them. She really liked the ride. That old car had a name, Leapin Lena!!! They used it for hunting, fishing, wherever they didn't want to take a regular nice vehicle.
I can still hear my Mom yelling at Dad, as he would give her a ride in the pasture in the non winter months, going up and down the hills, like a maniac. I was always glad that the brakes worked, as he would stop just short of the ****. Oh what fun. We also used to put a hood from another old car, and a bale of straw or hay on the hood, and sit on that behind Leapin Lena.. And that was our greatest ski rides i have ever known. Although, some sharp corner turns, turned us upside down in the snow.... Glad to be alive today haha......

It's a genuine wonder that some of us survived, either our parents or ourselves, as the case may be. I was going through some old pictures last weekend and found one of that old truck, top all polished shiney (bare metal like those car hoods), winders all busted up, one front wheel and tire stood a bit outa plumb. Pretty much a wreck, but good memories. "D"

The rider would add weight for the two people it usually takes to push it. They are in all kinds of shapes, with certain requirements I'm sure. I haven't researched the requirements, however I do know it would have to have a toilet seat with a hole. Some are quite fancy. Some are crude. They even have a race for the kids ages.

It's not a cold winter's day anymore! It's a beautiful sunshiney day:) And the peepers are here, the peepers are here! (the little frogs that come out in the spring and make the really cool noises at night). It was wonderful to sleep with the window open and hear them all night. No more outhouse races for me!

I'm from SC originally, where we have the annual Kudzu Festival. Have you ever celebrated a creeping, invasive vine????? In my home town, people pay to watch any kind of vehicle race, including outhouses!

Kudzu festival? I've heard the stuff almost grows fast enough to watch! It's pretty to look at, though, when just driving by! Is that a comfort?

I have the kudzu-of-the-north - grapevine. It grows quickly; it's hard to remove; it's resilient in both drought & flood, cold & heat; and it chokes out the branches and flowers from the trees it clings to - what more could one want from an invasive plant? I've chopped those vines down to the roots, poisoned some roots or ripped them out of the ground and, each spring, THEY'RE BAAAACK!

Twice, I've invited the Girl Pioneers over for an afternoon of pulling them down and making wreaths out of it in my drive way. What a mess to clean up afterwards! Despite them walking away with dozens of wreaths of all sizes, I had quite a few left and decorated some of them for gifts. (Hmmm, time to call the Pioneer leaders again. It's been a few years.)

What a creative suggestion to get a service group to use the vines! I guess it's fortunate that you have grapevine, even though they appear to grow like the Grapes of Wrath! LOL

Grapes of Wrath that happened just down the road a bit. Too bad we're losing a lot of the farmland to housing around here. I can hardly complain as I'm a transplant as well.

Seems like alot of farmland is getting lost to people moving in , and many other ways, they are loosing their ground.
And i type today, on this thread, thinking , thinking, thinking, and i can't find one good thing on finding something to do on a cold, snowy winter day. After seeing my tulips come out a little over a week ago, i find winter very upsetting to my soul right now. But, maybe in a week, we won't have any snow left. Gee, only predicting somewhere between 6 to12 in. of this white wonderful snow.
See, when it hits, i can imagine baking my cake, meal, and boom, no electric again. Keeping my fingers crossed, that this county doesn't get hit with it. haha ha
I can't even get out of the driveway now, but guess i could hoof it, if i need anything. Nope, don't need anything.. Take care all.....:-)

i had to reply again, Not that you asked me, but, many of us have a problem with slow speed internet. I never have been able to go to the chat room. I want to, and others say, slow speed, like takes forever. Frankly, i don't get it. I can go to other chat rooms, and no problems. Here, is like another world. So, maybe that is why. I think it could be fun too, but gave up on chat.

Thanks, but , when i first signed into this Lutherans on line, they said, i needed java, and i could download it from them. And i did, and the computer did. So, i don't know why it won't go to the chat room. So, also understand , when you just said, you meant chat as the message boards now too. I still know, that some say it's fun to go to the chat room too. But, i'm not the only one that can't get in... :-(
But, thanks for replying, as Smiley said once, takes a long time on slow speed. Dont' see that as the reason, though. As most say for slow speed, they have seen worse on their slow speed connnections.
No matter. But, thanks anyway Yooper! That's right, your from Mich. I have alot of neices and nephews in the central and lower eastern part of the state there. bye

I know, but, Smiley, I thought in one thread awhile back, you said, if one waits thru the time, you could get into CHAT! Like you could wash your laundry, and clean your house, ect. I know that's not the exact quote, but, i don't want to wait that long !! haha..
Dakota Rose, and i have chatted email, and she says, it's a no go also. I don't get it. Oh well, if it's due to slow speed connections, just won't go with anything else, as it's quite expensive, and this is fun on the other 2 sights as you say.
bye for now,,, LLJ
